LORAZEPAM – For premedication before intravenous sedation
For patients with particularly high levels of anxiety concerning dental or surgical treatment, it is helpful to take one to two 1mg tablets of Lorazepam around 1 hour before your surgical appointment time with a very small amount of water.
Dr Priestland will determine how much medication you will require.
After having taken these tablets you MUST NOT DRIVE and you should have someone with you, ideally your escort who will bring you to your appointment and then take you home afterwards.
Please, remember and remind your escort that they should remain with you for a minimum of 6 hours after having received intravenous sedation. You should go home and rest with extra pillows so that you are not lying flat.
This medication will reduce your anxiety and start to become effective 30 minutes or so after taking it with a small amount of water only.
By the time you arrive for your appointment you should feel less stressed and then I will provide you with intravenous sedation and you will loose all anxiety, becoming unaware of your surroundings and during the time of your sedation you will be unable to form memories so that once the procedure is completed your first words are usually “have you done it yet?”
Possible side effects of Lorazepam include:
Impaired alertness, drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, unsteadiness; loss of memory, stomach upset, headache, or rash.
